Catholic Update A Look at Pope Benedict’s New Encyclical Christ Our Hope
Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI will be visiting Washington and New York next month. His theme will be “Christ Our Hope” Apostolic Journey to the United States 2008. Listed below is a sample of the Holy Father’s Itinerary.
Pope Benedict XVI is arriving Tuesday April 15th at Andrews Air Force Base, greeted by President and Mrs. Bush along with local dignitaries of the Church and the apostolic nuncio.
Wednesday, April 16th the Holy Father will again meet with President Bush and the First Lady on the south lawn of the White House. A Private Prayer service and meeting with 350 bishops of the United States will take place at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Thursday, April 17th the Holy Father will offer Mass at the new Nationals Park in Washington. This will be the first non-baseball event in the park! Thursday evening the Holy Father will meet with Buddhist, Muslims, Hindus, Jews and representatives of other religions at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center.
Friday, April 18th the Holy Father will address the United Nations. A prayer service with leaders from other Christian denominations will be held at St. Joseph’s Church founded by German Catholics in Manhattan.
Saturday, April 19th a mass for priests, deacons and members of religious orders will be held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. The Holy Father will meet with young Catholics including 50 youngsters with a range of disabilities at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers.
Sunday, April 20th the Holy Father will visit Ground Zero the site of the disaster at the World Trade Center. A mass at Yankee Stadium will be held to bring this historic visit to a close. The 200th anniversary of the Baltimore Archdiocese’s designation as an archdiocese as well as the birth of four dioceses – Boston, New York, Louisville and Philadelphia will be highlighted during the mass.
At 8:00 PM Shepherd One lifts off from John F. Kennedy airport in the Brooklyn Diocese heading east to the Eternal City.
